Hi, I started Nal seriously 07/01/12, i know It's only been a week and I guess I am going through the "honeymoon" I read so much about - it IS working.
However, I took it yesterday and started with a 5% beer (1 unit?) 45 minutes later. By the 3 rd beer I felt something of a buzz, that hadn't happened so far.
Usually it makes the alcohol have no real effect, I can feel the alcohol in my system, vision not too good, balance is off - but no buzz.
Within 5 hours I had 6 beers, and when the night was over I felt a distinct buzz. I didn't black out, and I didn't have a hangover this morning
but it bothers me that I was able to "drink through" the Nal. has this happened to anyone else? I went form 17 units per day to 2.5 units in 6 days, I could feel the effects
of detox and now I feel great! Is it possible the 50mg is not enough? Thanks for your input!

Taking Nal won't stop you from getting drunk. That's not how Nal works... You get the buzz from the fact that alcohol acts as a depressant (it slows the function of the central nervous system). Nal will only numb your opiate sensors so no "feel good" endorphin will be released as a "reward" for drinking alcohol. In time, your body will learn that drinking alcohol will not bring that endorphin bliss so it will stop craving for it. So, expect to get as drunk as you normally do when drinking under Nal and that's ok, it doesn't mean that Nal doesn't work. Depending on individual, it may take from a couple of months to years for your body to "forget" about the rewards of alcohol consumption. While that is the expected long term effect, there is a certain decrease in the alcohol urge while taking Nal but that goes back to "normal" if you stop taking it before drinking. I would stick with the 50mg dose. See also http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... mzHnAGz6Eg.

Hi Janx, yes, AndyGir is right. You're doing TSM correctly and should realize that if you drink a whole bunch you are still going to get drunk - it will just feel different.

Keep posting and maybe let us know in Weekly Progress how you get along. We'd love to get to know you and help you through this - we're all in the same boat :)

Nal doesn't stop you getting drunk if you want to. It helps make you able to make the decision not to drink, or not to drink as much.
