Out of around the approximately 2000 students I've had in class, the number of kids who have committed suicide is in the double digits. The number of kids who died in car accidents is two or three times that number and usually because they were drinking. Kids that age are dying in huge numbers and, as a society, we don't care. We think we have the handle on suffering?? After rereading my post, I made it sound as if younger ones do not ever have the pain that adults do. That was not my intent and I apologize for that. There are definitely younger ones that have real problems the same or worse than us adults. However, you must admit that there is a certain segment of younger ones, be it large or small (I don't know), that do it to conform with their peers. The younger a person, the more likely this is to occur. The older one becomes, such as someone over 40 or 50 or 60, the less likely they are going to perform this type of behavior, although I suspect that it never truly goes to zero percent. I personally have revealed a lot of disturbing facts about myself in order to help others. People here know I am a drunk. People here know that I am addicted to the benzodiazepine, Valium. People here know that I have attempted suicide four times. People here now know I used to cut myself to stop the real psychological pain. I also remember peer pressure when I was young. I trust I have made it clear that I both understand and I care. Bob PS I will not be discussing this subject any longer. It's too painful for me to remember those days of cutting.
