After being off alcohol and Naltrexone for around six weeks, I tried to drink again with the Naltrexone and I only managed to have one beer before the side effects hit me. I felt quite fuzzy headed, and for the next three days I felt hungover.

My question is for those who now rarely drink.

Do you still feel side effects from taking Nal, now that you take it less frequently, or is there a way of taking it once a week for example, whether you drink or not, just so that you can avoid those first time side effects over and over again?

Funny you mention this...TSM has done miracles for me and I rarely drink during the last year...At this point I am going to quit all together...well thats the intent...I haven't drank since xmas. But during the last year and going weeks without a drink then having one and taking the Nal..yes the side effects for me came back just like when I first started taking nal in the begining. However my attitude is this past year like I said was a miracle for me and if I REALLY wanna drink, then I have to deal with the side effects of Nal. To me those side effects, spacey feeling insomnia etc are NOTHING compared to the side effects of booze, black-outs, passing out on floors, depression, health issues, damaged relationships...we all know the drill of those side effects. I drank without Nal on xmas and the tolerance was still there, the love of booze still there, and I had a GREAT time and nobody got hurt...HOWEVER I know where it will lead and I do not and will not go back there. Kinda why I decided to just quit altogether...why drink at all at this point...it's been a year, the "social" thing I personally can care less about, when I do want to drink and take the nal miracously I don't want to drink and yes the side effects are back. So if I'm not gonna get drunk why drink? Sometimes during the past I thought "man I would love a beer about now" so I took my Nal and one or two...was fine and all but it never lived up to what it was in my mind leading up to "man it will taste soo good". Maybe nal kills it..lol hope so..cause that how it can start for me..one good one well hell one not two and then 25 beers later? Ya think I'm an alcoholic? I know this if TSM had not worked for me as well as it did there would be NO WAY i would be writing and thinking..hmm yeah I will just quit no biggie. So if wanna have a drink that bad and do, the side effects to me are part of what HAS TO BE if I wanna have that drink. I can't have my cake and eat it too

I fully concur w/ crown. If all I had to deal with were side effects of nal vs alcohol i would go w/ the nal. I didn't have many noticeable side effects tho.
I only wish I had discovered this much earlier. When discussing w/ some of my peers, I ask them, Do you know an alcoholic? Then I ask them if that person would be better off drinking half of what they did. They invariably answer yes(especially those talking about family members). That is the proof. The only proof that is necessary.

Thanks for your replies. :)

I think I might have found myself in a similar place. The Nal side effects are really off putting, so I tend to not bother drinking at all. Like you, I tried drinking without Nal, but with different results. I did not like the taste of beer, and ended up only having two of them. I then tried to have beer with Nal, and found that I preferred the taste of beer with Nal, but that I still didn't really want to drink that much.

It actually makes me feel a little bit sick to think of the taste of beer now.
