Does anyone know of a source for naltrexone in the UK? Am struggling to find a sympathetic GP. Any clues would be gratefully received,

Hi there,

I am UK based and opted to buy online as I didn't want my alcohol issue on my medical records (due to my occupation). I buy my Nal from All Day Chemist online and have found them to be pretty good and I have responded well to the brand that they stock. Its a scandal that Nal is not easily available in the UK, particularly given the national problems we have with alcoholism. I have been on TSM 15 weeks and it has changed my life. My drinking is under control and I now drink less than a third my pre TSM levels so I would really recommend the method. I have to admit I don't feel entirely comfortable taking the pills without my doctors knowledge and have had some worries about what would happen if I needed emergency treatment with opiates. For this reason I carry a card with me at all times stating that I am using Nal. I have also made my husband aware of the importance of informing any medical practitioners if I am ever in a situation where I need emergency pain relief.

Hope you manage to get access to Nal and start the method! Good luck.

You can try going to a private GP instead of an NHS GP. An NHS GP won't prescribe without a consultant's input. Susie: No employer can discriminate based on your medical records, so I don't understand your concern. If they could, I wouldn't have went to my GP.

Hi Zero,

Due to the nature of my work and the position of responsibility that I hold I was asked when applying for my current post to provide a report from my doctor which outlined my fitness for the role. Although it is not legal for an employer to discriminate I would rather not have this on my records. My job is indirectly related to the field of employment law and I have witnessed countless examples of employers discriminating against employees who have, for example, declared a mental health diagnosis for this reason I choose to be cautious although admittedly I'm probably just being a bit paranoid!

I think you might be a bit overcautious :) or at least I hope you are! I have OCD, and I think provided that you were never hospitalised for it and you otherwise have good references it should be OK. I had to go to an occupational "specialist" doctor several times when I was applying for jobs. Most of them clearly didn't know the ins and outs of OCD.

In fairness, I would never tell them I had a drink problem, but your occupational health doctor has no right to look at your long term medical history (I'm almost certain they have no right to request it). Thats for your GP only! (If it isn't, given my history, I may aswell throw in the towel  )
