I learned about TSM because I have an alcoholic in the family I'm trying to help. As I learn more about it though, I'm wondering if it might be helpful in my own life to curb other addictive behaviors... Probably the only reason I'm not addicted to alcohol is that I was already addicted to other things (solo pursuits like reading books or playing video games -- not particularly harmful and even marginally positive, but I've used them to constantly escape from the real world in a way that's been very harmful to my social life).

I'm starting to get this feeling that my entire life (when unsupervised by an authority figure or a looming deadline) I've been jerked around by the wiring in my brain more than any conscience thought process. As a further example, I'm a terminal procrastinator at work (where I could be using free time to do work on important personal projects rather than fishing around on the Internet for cheap thrills). All this may not seem that big a deal, and it's certainly not as bad as a serious drinking problem, but I'm falling waaaaay short of my potential and that is starting to really bug me. I wonder if the Donald Trumps of this world aren't just intelligent people whose brains simply aren't wired in such a way that they are led around by various addictions all day (or else they simply get such a high off of "success" itself, or else the work itself, that everything just falls into place).

Anyway, I'm considering getting some Naltrexone and trying to curb some of my pointless time wasting behavior by doing it while on the drug and then intentionally doing work (which gives me at least a minor "high") when not on it. I think I'll finish reading The Cure first though. If I do this, I'll be sure to post the details of the experience here. Meanwhile, any thoughts on this crazy idea are welcome.

In theory, any behavior that results in a release of endorphins should respond to selective extinction with naltrexone. There is a section in "The Cure" that discusses this. Naltrexone has been used in over-eating, gambling, internet pornography addiction and kleptomania treatment just to name a few.

why wouldn't this work if the behaviors are endorphin producing? i think you could be right that you have found other things that produce the brain chemicals you seek, (per your genetic make-up). good luck testing this. i would guess that the trick would be to use nal when you engage in those behaviors, and then abstain from both and introduce healthy alternatives.
let us know how it goes.
