Hi I am halfway through Roy Eskapa's book, and am very excited about TSM. I am in Seattle, and have just started to try to find a prescription for nal. I have very good insurance, so I hope I don't have to order offline, but I will probably do so just to get started.

I have been drinking heavily for about ten+ years, and it will kill me if I don't stop. I have been through inpatient rehab, AA and am tired of white-knuckling it.

I look forward to doing a lot of reading here and more posting.

Anyway, thanks everyone.

John

Welcome John,

So glad you're here. I have good insurance too and a good doctor who has provided Nal for me. I am the opposite of you so to speak...I am waiting on the book but am well on the way since Sept 16. As Jim said above, come here often. I've found this to be a really comfortable place to stop in once or twice a day (as long as there's a PC nearby). All of our stories are similar to a degree, AA, different treatment experiences, abstinences, white-knuckles, periods of no crisis and periods of withdrawal. All of know something I know deep down - I don't want to either drink the way I did or may not want to drink period. (Me, I haven't decided that yet-waiting on how things go here; and what freedom that is.) One thing I know - in 6-7 weeks I am already no longer drinking at a level that is harming my health. I am drinking to my health!

Hi and welcome.

When you get your nal, only take 25 mg on a full stomach as it will make you nauseous initially, as well as "spacey", but these side effects go away after you get used to the naltrexone in your system -- a week or two at the most. After the first couple of times with no nausea, move up to 50 mg. The book is great but do not expect a "cure" in three to four months. Expect to gradually re-gain control over your drinking habit after many, many months. Also, this board has a lot more "real life" anecdotal evidence about what to expect on TSM than the book. I encourage you to read as much as you can.

My best,

Nick

Hi John and welcome. I live on Capitol Hill, and as far as I know we're the only Seattlites here. If you do find a doc willing to prescribe please let me know, as I would like to get a legit script. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. You'll find a lot of great help and wonderful support here. Take care, and enjoy the rain. It's supposed to get us pretty good tomorrow.

Thanks everyone! I really feel welcome. I am SO glad there is another option out there besides AA.

Not to knock them - if it works for them - more power to them. I will still go to meeting once in a while just to hear and share and I have some good friends there. But I doubt I would EVER bring up TSM at an AA meeting.

I guess I am old fashioned - I believe a disease can have a medical treatment - not necessarily a religious one. 8-)
