Welcome Gwen.

The insert in the naltrexone specifies who should not take it. Check the restrictions, I doubt diabetics are included as a risk group, but check the insert. Naltrexone is a benign drug, safe for virtually everyone except for people with liver issues. (And a few other small categories in the insert I can't recall off the top of my head. Again, check the insert.)

You are probably experiencing the "honeymoon period" or an immediate reduced interest in drinking. This is not extinction, which takes months, and is probably temporary. Many of us see a spike in drinking after the honeymoon so do not be alarmed. As others have said, progress on TSM is a roller coaster and is not linear. But progress on naltrexone is very real and TSM works for the vast majority who try it.

Welcome and my best to you.

Nick

Hey Gwen,

Welcome, the people here are the best! I've yet to see a discouraging word and it seems as though we are one happy huge family even though with number in the 200's, I imagine that to be quite small if you take into consideration the millions of us that exist worldwide and countless atheists sitting in AA meetings wishing there was another way. (I was AA for 4.5 years,...no problem with them but they can be rather condescending with the "So hows that working out for you...."

So anyways welcome and feel free to post often. Sometimes I wonder if people get sick of hearing me, but if they're like me, I'm anxious to hear from all the others and if its a quiet day, I get a little depressed....and they've told me they love hearing from me...so don't be shy Cheers, Jim

Likewise. The more that we speak up, the more we encourage each other. That is the most appealing aspect of this program to me. No shame involved. We are all starting at the same place. The more info and experiences we can share the more people we can ultimately help.

Yay!

Don't ever hesitate to post. Everything you guys say is interesting. In the remote chance people aren't interested, they don't have to read it. Post away!

I am a Type 1, insulin dependant, diabetic. TSM has only improved my control. My HBA1C dropped 1.5 over the last month and a half or so. The best it has ever been. This of couse is not because of nal, it is because of my return to conciousness. Alcohol tends to make diabetics lazy in their control. So the more sober a person is the better they will do. This is a big part of the reason I am doing this, I want to be around for my family for many years to come. If your friend tries this it may save her life, or a limb, or her eyesight.
Every drug says for diabetics to consult w/ their medical pro. This is because so many drugs have an effect on blood sugar and exacerbate problems w/ organs diabetes effects, liver, kidneys, etc. From what I gather alcohol is one of/ if not the worst of them. So, IMO, it would only help her. If it doesn't it was worth a shot.

Welcome from Canada, too, Gwen, and from someone just on the other side of middle-age (but you know, it looks like it's up hill from here - geeessshhhh I must be drunk  ) I'm on day 21, never have drunk great quantities but just want to control what I drink, when I drink etc. Having more side effects and ill feelings than were addressed in the book - they make it sound so easy - it is easy, but NOT smooth in lots of cases. Hence the value of these wonderful, sharing people here.

I would recommend the book too. It's actually very helpful to have something solid to hold on to, and refer back to, as well as helping when you talk to a doc. We all know how doctors hate having upity patients who research stuff on the net and then demand "I want this stuff - I found it on the internet"

Welcome!!
