I am 10 weeks into TSM and am happy with my results thus far. I got NAL through a psychiatrist who recommended I also attend intensive outpatient therapy group. I went for a while and stopped. It is an abstinence based group and I couldn't get behind the whole idea of being a part of an abstinence based group if I'm not abstinent. I went to my psychiatrist for my 2 month check up and told her happy I was on NAL and explained The Sinclair Method to her. She prescribed NAL to be taken every day and of course to aim for abstinence. She was concerned about me not going to intensive outpatient therapy group. I am concerned about her continuing to prescribe me NAL. She recommended I talk to a therapist about why I no longer wanted to be in the group. I have an individual therapy session scheduled with the leader of the abstinence based group. How do I talk to him about The Sinclair Method without being dismissive or disrespectful to him or his profession? My main concern is continuing to stay on NAL and have a prescription indefinitely. How would you talk to him? Have any of you had similar experiences? Thanks for reading this!

it might be helpful to print out the "For Medical Professionals" chapter from the "The Cure for Alcoholism" book & take it along with you

you can download it here to print:

Goatmaster,

Try to come very prepared so hopeful you will have a chance.

I think asking the therapist if she has an open mind and give her the book before you have the session to give her time to digest it (and if she is any good research it). I would also contact the options saves lives to ask them for Dr. Roy Eskapa email address incase she has any questions. I do not think he will mind for if any practicing professional is willing to talk about TSM he will help out.

I would also find research that is done with abstinence and the failure rate with or without AA for it is high. I would explain how you are 100% compliant to take that pill for the rest of your life, for you never want to go back to where you are now, and how you know that AA based therapy is not for you. If he/she needs proof of how this works and or want to talk to someone that is "in control" or cured, I am sure someone here would be willing to chat with him/her. I would do it in a heartbeat, I have been doing this since May 8, and even though I am not all the way cured I feel I have enough control to express how TSM has saved my life. JoAnn is the moderators on the options saves lives forum and she has been through the program and would share if you gave her a heads up. I even think that Claudia would talk to her, for she is going to Capital Hill to try to have a bill passed for TSM to be use as a first option for AUD instead of abstinence.

If your doctor does stop writing the script you might be able to either find another doctor, or buy the nal. on line.

I do wish you luck,

Jaba
