Well it has been awhile since I posted but thought I would check in. Life has been great until this last month when my husband decided that he has his drinking under control now so he did not need to take Nal anymore. So he stopped taking if and slowly the drinking started getting worse again and the lying started again and the hiding the vodka started again....all because he could not admit that he really has a problem...tonite he was real bad and has started the crazy talk again but I am over it. I told him that I can walk away now knowing that I tried everything and that I have nothing left to give. So he is in the basement and hopefully sobering up and tomorrow if he still wants to leave then so be it. If e wants to stay then I am going to insist on him taking the shot....

Has anyone else ever tried this shot that lasts for 30 days (the name escapes me now but starts with a V) and has anyone else ever thought they were cured and did not need the Nal anymore? I am soooooo done and so are my girls....we are so tired of this and life would be I much easier if he were out of it....how sad it is to say that but it is true. Tonite the Gil's are all locked in their rooms trying to avoid him and I am just praying he will pass out so I can relax.

Lynn

Hi Lynn,
So sorry to read your post. I wish I had some tidbit of wisdom to provide but I don't. You need to do what is best for your girls and yourself. Just know that I'm thinking of you and praying things work out.

Started TSM Aug 2012. Had some success but over time the Nal SEs were so awful that stopped taking Nal. Managed a 30 day (Sept 2012) and 46 day (Feb/Mar 2013) AF period which also contributed to getting drinking under control.

Lynn, so sorry to hear that. The shot is called Vivitrol and, supposedly, it works well for the first month or so, but Sinclair only recommends it for the first month of TSM. The other problem is that it's super-expensive -- thousands per month. Your situation is sad and a good cautionary tale for the rest of us. It's very powerful for me to see the pain that such behavior causes on wives and daughters (I have all daughters, too). Thank you for sharing. I'd really love to hear how the originator of this thread made out, as I remember her's being the most compelling story I read when I first found this website.

Yes it's not supposed to be as effective as taking a dose right before you drink. Unfortunately TSM still requires effort on the part of the alcoholic, and you can't force him. Thinking you don't need naltrexone any more and drinking without it is source of relapse.

Now fully in control, alcohol no longer bothers me. Chose to go AF from 22nd July 2013.
TSM set me free
